The Golden Circle, Þingvellir, Gullfoss Geysir and Golf

Midnight Sun Golf

Have you ever played golf in the midnight sun next to an erupting geyser. Icelandicgolf offers you the most famous day tour in Iceland, with a big twist, Golden Circle & Golf. Only a golf shot away from the old Geysir is the Geysir golf course where we are going to play golf after visiting Thingvellir, the national park, Gullfoss, our most beautiful waterfall and the famous Geysir.

The course was laid out with minimal disturbance to the existing terrain. It is a policy that was shared by all those involved; the developer, the local authorities and the designer.

The course area is L-shaped, with the holes routed in an out-in fashion similar to the Old Course at St. Andrews. Two rivers dominate the site and they come into play on every hole. The fairways are bordered by the native roughs sporting shrubs and heather. The style of bunkering is unique in Iceland, with the heather creeping around the rough edges, giving a natural look.

Still, the main design features remain the unpredictable natural landforms that were allowed to shine through from tee to green. There is no artificial mounding as seen on so many modern courses and the greens rely totally on hints from the natural undulations that were found on the site.

Every hole is named after the geysers at the geothermal area such as Geysir, Strokkur Sódi (the sod), Smiður (the carpenter), Fata (the bucket), Óþerrishola (the non-draught-hole, or the rainmaker), Litli Geysir (the small Geysir) and Litli Strokkur (the little Strokkur).

Route description

We drive from Reykjavík through Þingvellir which is a site of historical, cultural and geological importance. Þingvellir is the home of the first parliament of the ancient Vikings from 930 until 1798, and the valley is also famous for to mark the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The surrounding is beautiful with lava fields, the biggest natural lake in Iceland, Þingvallavatn, and the waterfall Öxarárfoss falls into the great rift valley, one of the two sites in the world where the effect of two major plates drifting apart can be observed

The year 2004 Þingvellir was listed on the UNESCO´s World Heritage site.

From Þingvellir we head up to the home of the famous Geysir in Haukadalur. The biggest geyser is Geysir itself which gave other the name and the reliable Strokkur which erupts every 3-7 minutes, spouting boiling water up to a height of 25-35 m.

The magnificent Gullfoss is within 10 minutes drive away, the most popular tourist attraction of the island. The white colored river, Hvítá cascades down in the waterfall Gullfoss originating in the Langjökull glacier. Gullfoss is called "The Golden Fall" since on a sunny day the water plunging down, first three steps and then two steps into the 32 m deep crevice truly look golden due to rainbow getting form in the mist clouds from the falls. An incredible sight.

To stand at Gullfoss and Geysir and experience the beauty and the wonder of nature is very uplifting and one feels more energetic when leaving these places than arriving. Inspired by this feeling we go to the golf course Geysir and play 9 holes, only a golfshot away from the Great Geysir. While playing in this beautiful natural looking course you can see the geyser "Strokkur" erupt only few meters away

Please note that weather in Iceland can be unpredictable, it can change in minutes so it is recommended that you bring warm clothes
